Capibara Vol. 3: Producing a Festival at a Remote River Beach in Central Portugal

Some projects are work, others are fun – and some are a bit of both. Capibara is the last kind.

From 31 July to 2 August 2026, we welcomed friends, artists and music lovers for the third edition of Capibara, a small festival that muti organised at Toca do Sadhu, a river beach at Pêgo das Cancelas in central Portugal. I was responsible for project management and production, and the festival is close to my heart.

The idea

We wanted a festival that feels like a gathering: music, workshops and good food under the trees, by the water, with no stress. The line-up had more than a dozen acts, from DJs and live sets to a live visuals performance by Beth Walker. Alongside the music, there were four workshops: liquid light shows, writing by the river, yoga and weaving a basket from pine needles.

Producing in a remote place

The location is the beauty of Capibara, and also the challenge. The river beach is remote, about 15 minutes by car from Sertã, which meant planning things that a city venue handles for you:

  • Access: clear travel information, from buses to local taxis, for people arriving from Lisbon, Porto and nearby.
  • Capacity: an RSVP list, so we could manage stock, food and the number of people at the site.
  • Rules for a natural space: no fire, incense or candles, respect for the river and other visitors, and clear guidelines for overnight stays.
  • Funding: a donation-based sliding scale and “artist menus” at the bar, so that part of what people paid went directly to the artists.
  • Programme: coordinating artists, workshop hosts, the venue and a partner space for the Friday workshop.

THANK YOU

to the artists, the workshop hosts, everyone at Toca do Sadhu, the muti team and everyone who came.
